I use MSN a fair bit… Mainly out of complacence than any thing else…
Every now and then I get someone who doesn’t know who I am but has me as an MSN contact. This annoys me a little bit because obviously if you have no idea who I am (even though I keep my name as my display nam(this must mean that you have absolutely no idea who I am…)) , to me this would indicate that we probably aren’t that close and the reason I’m your MSN contact has long since expired…
I got one of those this morning but it wasn’t the fact that they had no idea who I was but the way they went about finding out… I’ll play out the conversation for you…
Them: Who is this?
Them: *Nudge* (that annoying MSN nudge thing that has absolutely no use what so ever and is only used by people who I don’t like(sorry if you use it but chances are I don’t like you…(and the reason I paused is because I don’t have the ability to state to someone who I am, there could be lots of reasons why I’m your MSN contact do you really expect me to state them all??????))
Me: Phil (Seeing that this was my display name I thought it was self evident, but maybe reminding them that I’m a smart ass would jog their memory…)
Them: That was random. Where do you live? (At this point I’m a bit hesitant someone who I don’t know and isn’t on my contact list is asking me where I live over the internet… I’m fairly sure that my mother told me not to answer that kind of thing…)
Me: *I try and summarise my entire life into all the places this person might no me(I’m not going to relay that imformation because it was fairly long and boring and well private…) at the end I said who the hell is this? because by this point I didn’t really like this person…
And that was end of the conversation… I’m not sure if the person remembered who I was and decided that talking to me wasn’t something worth doing and that telling me who they were might start a conversation that they didn’t want. i.e. They’re a selfish four letter word (take your pick).
OR
They had no idea who I was and didn’t feel like telling me that because that would be courteous. i.e. They’re a selfish four letter word (choose a different one this time just to mix it up).
It’s rare that I’m able to determine someone personalty after only talking to them for about 1 minute (and most of the talking was done by me).

So I haven’t posted in ages… Oh well…
I celebrated Christmas (not entirely sure why).
Managed to stay awake until midnight on new years eve. Which I normally manage to do, but not always…
With the extra time that I’ve had on my hands I’ve been doing extra nothing, just for a change.
I’ve done some things… just nothing useful… I read the Commercial Television Industry Code of Practice which is actually a good read… Basically it says everything that free-to-air television channels can and can’t do (in Australia)…
My favorite section is on sex-lines the heading for this section is “Commercials Relating to Products of a Particularly Intimate Nature”
But what’s underneath is more fun:
“A commercial for a telephone sex-line or similar service must be classified ‘MA’. It may only be scheduled after 11.00pm and before 5.00am on any day, and should not be placed within any religious program or sports program or in any drama program with a religious theme.”
I had a double take when I saw sports program but I figure it’s because a young person might stay up to watch it or record it… So thats fair… But the main problem I have with it is that you can’t show them during a religious program. I’m willing to bet that there’s a religion out there that says it’s ok to use sex lines, I also doubt that most of the major monotheistic doctrines (Christianity, Judaism and such…) Don’t mention sex lines… I’m fairly sure they don’t. I know the bible says that fornication is out along with adultery but I’m not sure talking dirty falls under either of those categories… Lust is one of the deadly sins but I’m not sure that it falls under that either… But I’m not a priest so I could be wrong…
Another thing I found interesting was that during elections T.V. stations are allowed to have an extra minute of advertising per hour if it’s filled by political ads. I don’t quite understand why…. Depending on the time of day you’re allowed 13 or 14 minutes of advertising. During elections it’s 14 or 15…
The most annoying thing though was that it turns out that those infomercials they have on the morning shows don’t count towards those minutes. They’re allowed to screen as many of those as they want… Which is just stupid because they are just adverts they shouldn’t be exempt if the segment wouldn’t normally feature in the show (i.e. someones paid for it) I think it should count as advertising. But apparently I’m wrong. Plus it’s all based on complaints if someone doesn’t complain then nothing happens… Which basically means nothing happens who’s willing to sit at the T.V. with a stopwatch?.
This reminded me of something I saw on the ABC about subliminal messaging so I went to website and dug it up in the archives. But my question is what happens when the subliminal messaging gets so fast that no one notices? It’s a complaint driven system what happens when no one notices? The transcript is here:
http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s2082405.htm there’s also a link to watch the segment it’s only 5 minutes long and worth a look (I had to use IE to view it).
